TRAINING
To prevent substance use disorders, build strong families, and empower the Martinsburg community through police, school, community, health, and education partnerships.
Some training is held on school grounds as part of a school’s Professional Development hours, and some are held after school as a part of our Trauma Sensitive Educator Training (TSET) Curriculum. This training is only available to Berkeley County School system educators.

ACEs 101

Training Curriculum Outline
This training will introduce participants to the science of ACES, toxic stress, and the effects these factors can have on body and brain development. Participants will get an overview of what trauma-informed care looks like in a classroom, and practical tips on encouraging resilience in their students
- Participants will have a general understanding of the brains physiological response to trauma/toxic stress.
- Participants will understand the value of using a trauma-informed lens to ask the question “what happened to you?” instead of “what's wrong with you?” to deal with challenging students
- Participants will understand what resilience is, and how to build it through relationships with their students
Secondary Traumatic Stress

Training Curriculum Outline
Coping with the effects of others' trauma can be draining and can have lasting negative effects. It is not uncommon for educators who deal with traumatized children to develop their own symptoms of traumatic stress. This is known as secondary traumatic stress, and this stress can lead to burn-out, constant fatigue, and a loss of personal fulfillment at work. In this training, participants will understand the difference between positive and negative ways of coping with daily stress and the importance of self-care and resources to manage vicarious stress. Additionally, participants will be able to identify the signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue, and how to use their voice to advocate for their individual needs.
- By the end of this training, participants will be able to understand the importance of self-care and have access to resources and tools to help manage vicarious trauma.
- By the end of this training, participants will have an understanding on the difference between positive and negative ways of coping with daily stress.
- By the end of this training, participants will understand the signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue.
- By the end of this training, participants will understand that they matter, have value, and how to use their voice to advocate for their individual needs.
Frameworks That Foster Resilience

Training Curriculum Outline
By the end of this training participants will have a basic understanding of what constitutes trauma, and how it can present in children physically and physiologically. Additionally, this training will cover what Adverse Childhood Experiences are, and how to use effective, positive, and realistic frameworks to counteract behavioral issues stemming from trauma or attachment issues.
- Participants will be able to differentiate between toxic stress, trauma and complex trauma and understand how they can affect the body and brain.
- Participants will understand the importance of resilience as well as factors and practices that can increase resilience.
- Participants will understand the 3 tiers of PBIS and the ARC framework
Nurtured Heart Approach Pathway
By the end of this training participants will understand that The Nurtured Heart Approach is a relationship-focused methodology founded strategically in “The 3 Stands” for helping children build Inner Wealth by the founder Howard Glasser. The process is geared toward helping all children but focuses on helping the most challenging child behaviorally, socially, and academically.

Summary
Introduction to trainer. Philip Glasser video introduction. Overview of traditional methods of behavior interventions and their perceived verses actual modification efficacy with intense children. Overview of the “3 Stands”.
- By the end of this training participants will understand that conventional methods and teaching often fail with intense children.
Session 2

Summary
Stand 1 explained and video examples given. Review of Emotionally Nutritious words. Discussion of practical application of Stand 1. Stand 2 explained and video examples given. Discussion of practical application of Stand 2.
- By the end of this training participants will understand how utilizing Stand 1 and Stand 2 can shift a challenging child to using his or her intensity into positive success inside and outside the classroom.
Session 3

Summary
Review of Stands 1-2 and handouts. Stand 3 explained and video examples given. Final discussion of practical application of Stands 1-3. Group discussion of future utilization of NHA Stands. Overview of NHA online resources available for educators.
- By the end of this training participants will be learn and able to apply the core methodologies and 3 Stands of the Nurtured Heart Approach to build Inner Wealth in ALL children and create a richer social-emotional environment.

Trauma-Informed Strategies for De-escalation

Training Curriculum Outline
By the end of this training participants will understand the necessity of non-judgmental perspectives, understand body positioning, paraverbal communication, and how to communicate effectively and reasonably when dealing with a person in verbal elevation/escalation. Participants will also be instructed on how to set overall enforceable limits and rebuild rapport, while gaining a thorough understanding of how to diffuse verbal escalation situations in order to avoid physical altercations.
- By the end of this training participants will understand the importance of respecting personal proximity and space.
- By the end of this training participants will understand what open body language is and how it can be interpreted.
- By the end of this training participants will understand ways to enforce reasonable limits in their classrooms
Yoga in the Classroom

Training Curriculum Outline
Yoga in the classroom teaches a brief overview of specific tools teachers can model for students to use to in order to relax, focus and gain clarity in the classroom. This training will provide tips and techniques that educators can utilize immediately such as “brain-breaks” and incorporating breathing techniques and calming, yet environment appropriate, body movements. By taking this training, educators will be able to not only experience the positive physical and psychological effects yoga moves can have, but also be able to safely and appropriately teach and model these movements for their students.
- By the end of this training, participants will have experienced a set of yoga movements intended to increase understanding of understand the body’s physiological response to yoga can leveraged to create a more trauma-informed classroom.
- By the end of this training participants will be equipped with the skills they need to start incorporating mindfulness into their classroom.
- By the end of this training, participants will be able to lead their classrooms safely into one or more yogic movements designed to regulate emotions, improve focus or gain clarity in the classroom.
